Outline of Research

This study examines the current state of contemporary art practices in Southeast Asia. This study mainly focuses on dance, theatre, literature, and film, although the boundaries between these genres are not restricted. Through dialogues, interviews, collaborative creation, and commissioning of new works with artists, the study aims to explore how artists pursue their original art activities while confronting various issues in the contemporary world.      

Purpose of Research, Its Significance and Expected Results, etc

This study considers the current status of contemporary art activities in Southeast Asia by focusing on performing art forms. This study examines the activities of upcoming artists in Southeast Asia.

The study aims to consider the following topics:
To examine sactual cites of artists’ creative activities, explore the sharing of history and memories, facing traditional culture, and search for their identification.

The study can also present some concrete perspectives on the possibility that contemporary art practices influence global issues, such as the history of social division, gender disparity, conflict with traditional norms, the relationship between body representation and religious piety, disaster recovery and regional activation, and the cultural life of immigrants.

By presenting the research results not only through written texts but also through performances, this study can provide a new perspective on how to share them with a wide range of people.

The study also aims to consider the following topics in the future:
①Possibilities to consider the characteristics of Southeast Asia as a cultural region.
②Influences of art activities on society.
③Contribution of the study on performing art forms in the research of contemporary art where the examination of the visual art forms had been dominant.
④Relationships between the study of contemporary arts and history, politics, and society in Southeast Asia.
⑤Relationships between the study of contemporary arts and globalization.
