Title: Talcott Parsons Comes to Campus: A Marcos Dictatorship Think Tank and the University of the Philippines

Abstract:
The lecture looks at the brief history of the Presidential Center for Advanced Studies (PCAS) a high think tank-cum-academic institution imposed by the Marcos dictatorship on the University of the Philippines (UP) in 1973. It examines PCAS’s grand plan to educate and orient a new generation of cadres under its “Cultural Liberation Program” who would then help bring about the “new Filipino collective will” that the dictator had dreamt about.
Bio:
Patricio N. Abinales recently retired as Professor from the Department of Asian Studies, University of Hawaii-Manoa. His recent book is Presidents and Pests, Cosmopolitans and Communists (Ateneo, 2024). He is writing a book on the social history of Filipino cuisine.
